Press Release – Polk Mechanical Receives Excellence in Construction Award
Polk Mechanical Company, LLC Wins the ABC North Texas Excellence in Construction Award
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX – October 22, 2008 – Polk Mechanical Company received an Excellence in Construction Award from the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC), North Texas Chapter, honoring outstanding construction projects in the region. The award for the best “Mechanical/Industrial job between $2 and $10 million dollars” was presented at ABC’s recent awards ceremony at the Belo Mansion in Dallas, TX to Polk Mechanical Company for their work on the Onsite Biomass Electric Generating Facility project.
As a part of this project, Polk Mechanical relocated, modified, reconditioned and installed a 5 MW wood-fired biomass electric generating facility. The facility consists of a wood fuel handling feed system, a wood-fired boiler producing 900 lb steam, and a 5MW electric turbine generator. The biomass fuel is comprised recycled of hardwood waste products.
The project required sending supervision to Tacoma, Washington to remove over 3000 linear feet of conveyors from an operating facility and shipping to Forney, TX. The boiler and turbine generator were removed from an operating facility in Bessemer City, North Carolina, and shipped to Forney, Texas. Upon arrival of the salvaged equipment, PMC had crews unload and sort over 96 tons of boiler support structure, conveyors, boiler components, and steam piping materials. Construction of the project consisted of the erection of the conveying system, boiler structure, boiler installation, boiler exhaust system, steam piping, and setting of turbine generator.
Having won an Excellence award at the local chapter level Polk is now eligible to compete for the Eagle Award, which recognizes the top projects in the nation. The national ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C. in June of 2009.
